ONE of the most distinctive voices from Britain is coming to the Helsinki Hall of Culture next Wednesday when Marianne Faithfull performs an intimate show with sole backup coming from guitarist Doug Pettibone.

Drawing on a career that has spanned over four decades, Faithfull first emerged in the public’s consciousness when she released her version of Rolling Stones’ As Tears Go By – the first song ever written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. After a long battle with chemical addiction and resultant commercial absence, she returned late in 1979 with the landmark album, Broken English boasting her memorable adaptation of John Lennon’s Working Class Hero.

Her influence on younger generations is well appreciated, having collaborated with artists as varied as Billy Corgan, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave during her career. Further expanding her oeuvre, her most recent release, 2008’s Easy Come Easy Go, saw Faithfull adapting songs from such artists as Billy Holiday, Morrisey and Dolly Parton.

Faithfull has also enjoyed success as an actor, most notably in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, as well as a memorable turn in Irina Palm.

Following on receiving the Icon of the Year Award this year from Q Magazine, this current European jaunt sees her playing a stripped down acoustic show; something she hasn’t done since 1990’s Blazing Away tour with Barry Reynolds.
